Flylady: Baby Steps to Getting Organized

Today I want to introduce you to a great website, Flylady.net

I am a fairly organized person. I like things in their place and don’t do well with lots of clutter around. But I do see a few pockets in my house that could use advice from Flylady. My office continues to challenge me as well as my Tupperware cupboard and well, jewelry storage just is beyond me. Many years ago Tina told me about Flylady.net and so I decided to have a gander and see how she could help me.

Now some of the things seem quite basic but all her tips make a lot of sense. The very first task she asks people to do is to clean their kitchen sink. She says that if we have a clean kitchen sink it will give us a sense of satisfaction and therefore we will be inspired and motivated to do more. And if we don’t have time to do more then at least we have a clean sink!!

She has many other tips on her site as well. She teaches her readers to create new habits and not just the end result of being organized. I admit I like this approach. It doesn’t feel quite as daunting as feeling like you have to tackle a whole project at once. She breaks it all down to “baby steps” and sticks to that principle throughout her website. She says choose three things for the morning and three things for the evening routine. It is the consistency of doing these baby steps that will lead to big results over a longer period of time. (By the way, did you know it takes 28 days to make a new habit?)

What I like about Flylady is she breaks tasks down into do-able small bites. She has a calendar where she gives a new task every day for one month. So, for instance, day one is shine the sink. Day two, is do a load of laundry first thing in the morning. Each day you are to add to the task list. It is such a small thing to add that you will hardly notice it BUT you have to be consistent and do it everyday.

So when you sign up, it is a good idea to explore the site so you know what is expected and then each day you will receive an email with your “to do” item and a motivational message.   She also has a list on her site so you can look it up if you need to.

Have a peek and see what you think. Let us know if this is a site that may work for you or if you have any great tips, let us know at
